Between May 21, 1948 and December 31, 1957, our building housed the USMCR 1st (later the 4th) 105mm Howitzer battalion. This was changed again to the B Battery 6th 105mm Howitzer Battalion. This unit was activated to serve under Chesty Puller in the Chosin reservoir battle of the Korean War. We have a photograph of the unit that activated and trained at Camp Pendleton, California, just prior to deploying to Korea. We have muster rolls for the battalion and other archives.
In addition the 41st Independent Commando Royal Marines of the British Forces was assigned to the First Marine Division and participated in the battle at Chosin reservoir. President Harry S. Truman awarded the Presidential Unit Citation to the First Marine Division and the Royal Navy for these actions. A retired member of the Royal Marines came to St. Joseph and to our museum and recognized the connection. On returning to England, he commissioned a plaque commemorating that brotherhood which was presented to us in May 2007 by Col. Mark Neate, senior liaison officer of the British Army at Fort Leavenworth. Semper fi to all Marines!
